If you want to disconnect from the world, stand on the pegs, and let the rear wheel step out a bit, the Pisgah National Forest is your playground. This isn't about perfectly paved sweepers; this is about getting dirty.
The Forest Service Roads (FSRs) in Pisgah offer hundreds of miles of unpaved exploration. You'll weave through dense Appalachian rainforest, cross small creeks, and discover waterfalls that cars simply can't reach.
The terrain ranges from smooth, hard-packed gravel to rutted, rocky climbs. Cell service is nonexistent in most of the forest, making this a true backcountry adventure just outside of Asheville.
Expert Rider Tips
- Download Your Maps: You will lose cell service. Download offline maps or bring a dedicated GPS.
- Watch for Washouts: Heavy mountain rains can quickly change the condition of gravel roads. Ride within your line of sight.
- Yield to Traffic: You may encounter logging trucks, mountain bikers, and hikers. Slow down on blind corners.
- Pack Water and Tools: There are no facilities out here. Be self-sufficient.

From Downtown Asheville:
Via North Mills River (Quickest Gravel): Take I-26 East to Exit 40 (NC-280). Head south towards Brevard for 4 miles, then turn right onto North Mills River Road. Follow it past the campground where the pavement ends and FSR 1206 (Yellow Gap Road) begins.
Via Bent Creek (Closest to Town): Take I-26 West to Exit 33 (NC-191). Head south on NC-191 for 2 miles, then turn right onto Bent Creek Ranch Road. Follow signs for Lake Powhatan; the gravel (FSR 479) starts just past the recreation area.
Via US-276 (Deep Forest Access): Ride the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Wagon Road Gap (Milepost 412). Exit onto US-276 South into the heart of Pisgah. This grants access to legendary routes like Avery Creek Road (FSR 477) and Headwaters Road (FSR 475).
