Max Patch Loop
A rugged mixed-surface loop leading to a 360-degree Appalachian bald.
The Ride Experience
The Max Patch Loop is the quintessential Appalachian dual-sport ride. It combines winding paved farm roads with steep, remote gravel climbs through the Harmon Den Wildlife Management Area.
The destination is Max Patch, a famous high-elevation bald mountain top traversed by the Appalachian Trail. You'll park the bike and take a short hike to the summit for an incredible 360-degree view of the Smokies and the Black Mountains.
The gravel roads leading up to the patch can be washboarded and steep, requiring good throttle control and comfort with loose surfaces.
Expert Rider Tips
- Gravel Experience Needed: The unpaved sections are steep and often rutted. You should be comfortable riding off-road.
- Watch for Hikers: You are riding through a popular hiking and camping area. Keep your speed down on the dirt.
- Bring Hiking Boots: You can't ride to the very top. You'll need to walk the last quarter-mile to the summit.
