    The Ride Experience

Stretching from Deals Gap (the start of the Tail of the Dragon) down through North Carolina, South Carolina, and into Georgia, Moonshiner 28 is steeped in bootlegging history and offers some of the most scenic, flowy riding in the southeast.

Unlike the hyper-technical Dragon, Moonshiner 28 allows you to actually get into a rhythm. It features long, sweeping curves that hug the banks of the Little Tennessee River, climbs through the Nantahala National Forest, and passes directly by stunning roadside waterfalls.

The section between Franklin and Highlands, NC, is particularly spectacular. You'll ride through the Cullasaja Gorge, a narrow, twisting section of road carved into the rock face directly above the river. It's a perfect blend of riding joy and sightseeing.

    Expert Riding Tips

    • 01.Stop at Dry Falls: Just outside of Highlands, you can literally walk behind a massive 75-foot waterfall. It’s a must-do break off the bike.
    • 02.Watch the Driveways: Because this is a state highway (not a controlled parkway), be mindful of hidden driveways and local traffic pulling out from blind curves.
    • 03.The Cullasaja Gorge: The road narrows significantly here with steep drop-offs. Keep your eyes on the road, not just the spectacular river below.
    • 04.Link it Up: Moonshiner 28 perfectly connects the Tail of the Dragon to the south, making it the ultimate return route after riding the Dragon.
